Mimic (Hypolimnas misippus)
This butterfly occurs rarely in the islands. The females mimic the appearance of the African monarch (Danaus chrysippus), suggesting that they arrived from Africa, perhaps via the slave trade. The females and males are very different in appearance, and I have only seen a single male and no females at this time. It may be interesting to note that the viceroy butterfly ( Limenitis archippus), which similarly mimics the American monarch, does not appear on the island.
