Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)

The monarch butterfly is common throughout North and South America, with four subspecies identified in the Caribbean. Subspecies megalippe occurs throughout the Antilles, but the mainland subspecies plexippus is also found throughout the Caribbean, making it very difficult to distinguish the two subspecies.
