Red-footed Tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria)

The red-footed tortoise is native to South America, but has been introduced to many islands in the Caribbean. It is popular as a pet and also as a food. Allegedly it is considered “fish” by the Catholic Church, so large numbers are consumed when meat consumption is prohibited. Threats to this tortoise include overhunting for food and pets as well as habitat destruction. This specimen was seen on Ilet Pinel, wandering on a foot trail on an overcast morning.
