Ground Lizard (Ameiva plei)
This common lizard is typically seen scurrying around on the ground amongst dry leaves. It can be found on roadsides and even patrols beach areas. In addition to St. Martin, it is also found on Anguilla and St. Barths, but the population on St. Martin is considered a distinct subspecies. The coloration is somewhat variable, but it is typically brown with white or greenish spots from the hips down the tail. It can also be distinguished from the anoles by the large, plate-like scales on the top of the head. It is the only species of ground lizard recorded in St. Martin.
