Here’s a pretty mesmerizing video of one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world, and I believe the first to ever hold a whale shark (I believe they have three now). I could probably watch this for hours! Click through the link below the video to see the higher definition version on Vimeo (and full-screen for maximum effect). Note the scuba diver in the tank for scale!
Jon Slayer was kind enough to contact us with some excellent ESS footage from Rodrigues Island off Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. In this video, he explores the lagoon of said island and finds many things, including moray eels and giant worms with tentacle mouths…all in very shallow water. For more of his work, click through to vimeo or his web site.
Our Expedition section has been updated with a couple exiting recent expeditions: freshwater exploits in the Bennington area of Vermont and an exploration of the unique marshlands of Mordecai Island in New Jersey. In both cases (especially Vermont), these are unique expeditions to areas that may have had little or no extreme shallow snorkeling exploration in the past.
Hopefully we’ll see everyone at the NYUPS meeting tomorrow night at Arctica Bar & Grill. The evening’s theme is Caribbean.
